Erythronium americanum occurs in eastern North America, particularly in the Great Lakes region and the Mississippi Basin. It is found in mesic and dry-mesic deciduous and mixed forests, from sea level to 900 m. A perennial herb, with green ovate or elliptic leaves, irregularly mottled with brown or gray, and a single-flowered inflorescence. The flower is nodding, with 6 recurved, yellow tepals. This is a spring ephemeral species, blooming from March to May. The fruit is a capsule, and the seeds are dispersed by ants. These lilies often form clonal colonies by producing offshoot runners from the corms.
